Your bucket lists for Jeju Island-Episode1-Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise Peak(성산일출봉)

Jeju Island(제주도), the biggest island which is located in the southwest of South Korea, the most wish attraction hope to go for Korean as well as foreign traveler inside of Korea. The top gorgeous spot boasts the best spectacular beautiful views of this awesome island must be the Seongsan sunrise peak, dare to say.

The view of Seongsan ilchulbong(sunrise peak) from the next seashore
This is situated in the eastern seaboard of Jeju Island. For this reason, this has been ranked always on the top as the spectacular spot of the sunrise. At each New Year’s many people used to visit here to meet the first wonderful sunrise. When I arrived at the morning around 9 AM, there were already many peoples in ready to climb this peak. Particularly in spring and fall season, here is always crowded with for middle or high school students group because they consider this destination as the essential course of a trip for educational purposes together with the Mount Halla in this island.
Jeju Island has usually more higher temperature than main land of Korea. For these reason, when I came there on the beginning of September, the temperature was rather closed to the summer season by the strong sunbeam. Near and far scenery from this point made me took a breath with its stunning beauty itself. Although I had poor physical strength, I was led to the a little steep path involuntarily under the impulse of the stunning beauty just like iron filings to a magnet. As I expected, it was not easy for me to climb this peak at one time. So I had to stop several times to get my breath back again. I was told in general it takes 50 minutes to one hour enough to climb up and down this small mountain (peak). In case of me, I took one and half hour.
On the way to the top

Downside view from almost top
When I look back my memory about this peak, slow climbing was rather good to me than I went up to the peak like other people did fast by turbo speed. And thus I could put the beautiful scenery filled with fine beaches, waves and winds surrounding this peak, unique rocks and diverse flora showing into my eyes & mind more than other people on the way to the peak as I’d say definitely. Even though you have powerful strength to go up so easily, I wanna recommend that you take your own times for admiring the incredible nature over and over. There were proper brief rest areas to take a break at the many spots while following the path to the top.  Yes, sometimes the joy of travel suddenly comes from unexpected moment.
At the top.
The bowl-like shape and pointy edge like crown crater
As for the typical soft tuff cone, this was made by the hydro-magmatic eruption of volcano under shallow sea bed, just under the sea about 120 meters in depth, five thousand years ago presumably as I was told from the heritage commentator on the top. This peak has vertical cliffs showing diverse inner structures in three sides except west side of it due to erosive action by the strong wind and waves since ever made. This one also provides important formula text about the eruptive and depositional process of hydro-magmatic volcanoes in worldwide as well as past volcanic activity of itself. This peak was made at first period according to the study of creation of this island. As times go by the sands and gravels were flown from the next seashore into this islet, with this results, this peak in the sea was connected with main land of Jeju Island exquisitely. The bowl like crater on the top reflects the certain evidence that fairly powerful explosive volcano’s activity was made by the interaction of hot ascending magma and seawater or ground water during volcanic eruption. The standing in a row top edge shows pointy shape like the crown not as usual other kinds of peak. It is 600 meters in diameter and 90 meters in depth. This crater and the neighboring seashore reaching 1 kilo meter are designated as the Natural Reserve and well preserved.

The descending wooden stairs made a harmony with the greens and provided the fantastic shooting points to visitors. Don’t miss the last seashore point of the right side which black sands are spread out.
On the right side when you go down
For your common sense, this island is the first site ever designated in South Korea as the UNESCO World Natural Heritage in 2007. This is the one of the nine geological sites in Jeju Island as world geo-parks by UNESCO’s GGN. It ranked one of the top 7 of world superb natural landscape in 2011. The best seasons are from the spring to the fall. Jeju Island is far one hour from Seoul by plane.
For your transportation, I would like to recommend to rent a car when you visit this island because the public ones are so infrequent that you might be waste your time while to wait the rides. It was prepared in the area of airport with inexpensive rate. It is worthwhile to do that because this island shows precious gem scenery in each angle whenever you reach.
