The museum in nature, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon (국립현대미술관 과천관)

Art museum by the Zoo???
Yes, it is really located in the next to the Grand zoo (Seoul Zoo) as well as Seoul Land Amusement Park which appeared unrelated to other two. In 1980s Seoul city bought this huge land, developed and moved Grand zoo (1984), Botanical garden (1986),Art museum(1986) and others into this area from Seoul step by step. In this reason, although this situated in the Gwacheon city(과천시), neighboring of Seoul, it is still under Seoul city’s management.
The masterpiece 'The More, The Better'
Despite of some distance from Seoul, this museum actually has undertaken the main role in many sides of cultural primary duties to collect, preserve, study, exhibit and educate during the almost last 30 years. There was some controversial at first while it was constructing as the reason why the location shall hinder its accessibility. However, the problem was able to solve clearly by the opening of the Seoul subway line 4 one year before the opening of museum in 1985. It is true that this museum boasts international-sized facilities and the important role as cultural platform especially on the modern & contemporary architecture, design and crafts field.
The beacon shape of center part and the fortress shape of both side part of this building were originated from the traditional Korean architecture. It is operated by the Ministry of Culture, sports & Tourism. They offer free admission in case of permanent exhibition among the eight galleries all round year except Monday off.
The singing man

The prominent artwork must to see in here is the ‘The More, The Better’ which is video tower artwork by Namjune Paik who was world-famous video artist. Of course, you can see it free of charge. He was Korean American video artist and made it by using the 1003 television instead of canvas. He installed this artwork to celebrate the coming 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics in 1986. The quantity 1003 means the 03 Oct, the National foundation day of Korea and it reaches as high as the three floors.
The More, The Better
As it stood on 28 years, over 300 televisions didn’t work well. Although there were several times repair, the situation was scarcely ever quite well whenever I saw. But fortunately! They had it total rebirth in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation (2015.Aug15) through perfect and clear repair process. There were some controversial whether it kept on going to the old original ones or adopting new electric components inside when recovering it, I was told. After discussion, It was exactly reproduced into the original form and with the old type of elements. The repair cost in some cases is higher than to buy a new one as I heard. Really, it took so long time for visitors to regain the original brilliant art. The unique spiral-formed ramp core had such a wonderful structure matching with this artwork that I could appreciate this masterpiece in every angle by walking this slope way.

The restaurant on the 1st floor
Most of all as for me, the most favorite charming point of this art museum may be the outdoor sculpture park with having superb natural landscape, up to 33000 square meters in width. And thus, I used to have the feeling of going on a picnic occasionally when I visit this place.
At  the outdoor sculpture park
When the sculptures are in open-air, it really comes into its own whenever I see those one as I think. Leisurely museum in nature, this is the exact wording for here.
How to get there >>>Take the Seoul subway line 4 >> off at the Seoul Grand Park(exit #4) >>> walk to backward in three minutes on foot to take the shuttle bus (every 20 minutes, free ride)  **Museum closes on Monday, so bus also does not operate on Monday.
Free shuttle bus
Tip >>>Zoo next to this is very lovely place to visit also. It is the one of top 10 best Zoo in the world. It is recommendable to have a good time in there on a same day as one day course. There is no proper food area, just in my opinion, so it is better to take a lunch at the restaurant inside of museum or bring lunch box by your own.
